In 2007, Rio Tinto encountered an unprecedented challenge: how do we expand to satisfy the demand for iron ore from China?
With 180 potential mining sites, each varying in grade quality and ore presentation, along with three ports and 600 km of rail, identifying where to start was not an easy task- let alone deciding where to invest billions.
Previously tested tools could only facilitate the optimisation of one mine or two mines, but not the entire Pilbara in a singular operation. To address this requirement, every tool available in the market, along with those developed internally and externally, were evaluated, culminating in a Decision Matrix created by Jose Caceres, which became the instrument for expansion and informed all strategic decisions made over two decades. This tool is now available for the first time to the mining industry worldwide.
